SAMUEL M. LEADLEY, Ph.D., P.A.S. - Sam Leadley is the calf/heifer management specialist for the Attica Veterinary Associates, Attica, NY, a practice devoted solely to bovine care. He consults with dairy farmers and heifer growers with the economic goal of raising healthier, faster-growing animals through better management practices. Dr. Leadley is an active member of the Dairy Calf and Heifer Association. He also lectures and teaches classes, primarily in the Northeast and Midwest. He has made invited presentations at the Western Veterinary Conference, Western Dairy Management Conference, Cornell Nutrition Conference, and World Dairy Expo. Dr. Leadley writes Calving Ease, a free monthly newsletter that is distributed internationally, and "Calf Connection," a column that appears regularly in the Northeast Dairy Business magazine. He created and leads the Calf Management Academy, a division of the Attica Veterinary Associates, P.C. Dr. Leadley, in cooperation with Dr. Steve Mason, created a CD entitled, "Calf Manager," as a resource for learning to successfully raise young dairy calves. For the twelve years prior to joining the veterinary practice in 2000, Dr. Leadley managed the calf and heifer enterprise on a 1200-cow dairy in western New York State. In the early years of his tenure on that farm he was also the maternity herdsman. Other previous dairy experience includes that of herdsman for smaller dairy farms. Prior to 1982 Dr. Leadley was on the faculty of The Pennsylvania State University and the Extension staff at Cornell University. He holds B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell. Attica Veterinary Associates, P.C. PAM SOJDA - In 1990, Pam Sojda began raising calves at Noblehurst Farms where she worked for about six years with Sam Leadley in the maternity facility. At the same time, she worked at Offhaus Farms, Inc., and has been raising calves for them since 1991. She raises approximately 300 calves per year in hutches in western New York. Sam Leadley and Pam started Calving Ease in the fall of 1993. They both felt there was a need for more information about the youngest members of the future herds and for their care givers. She has been pleased there is an increasing amount of calf raising information available today and considers the DCHA a great resource.
