DCHA recognizes Steve McGuiness with Cady Award

Steve McGuiness accepts Cady AwardROCHESTER, Minn. -- Steve McGuiness, Account Manager for Elanco Animal Health, received the Roger Cady Award for Distingushed Service to the dairy calf and heifer industry, Tuesday, April 1, during the Dairy Calf and Heifer Conference in Rochester, Minn.

Dairy Calf and Heifer Association created the Cady Award in 1999 to recognize an individual’s distinguished service to the dairy calf and heifer industry.

“This is a huge honor,” McGuiness said. “DCHA does not give this award lightly.”

The Cady Award is not given annually and the list of recipients is a veritable who’s-who of the heifer business. The high honor has been reserved for just six other recipients including Roger Cady and Don Gardner.

“I’ve always seen DCHA as a good opportunity to work with a growing industry,” McGuiness said. “It’s a great group of people who take pride in what they do.”

McGuiness has been a proponent of the Dairy Calf and Heifer Association almost since its inception 11 years ago. In 1998 he started local round table discussions for heifer growers in the upper Midwest. That grew into meetings in five states which introduced many dairymen and women to the heifer growing business. McGuiness supported DCHA’s first National Farm Tour, served on the association management search committee and lead the committee to commission Bonnie Mohr to create Enchanted Pastures.

“You just hope and dream to build connections and get new people involved,” he said about the beginning of DCHA.

Although not a founding member, McGuiness has continued to support DCHA in the field and in the office.

“Steve has been behind this organization from the beginning,” Tom Gustafson, DCHA President and a friend of Mr. McGuiness. “He has been a supporter, advisor and a close personal friend to Roger (Imdieke) and me as we became leaders of the organization.”
